We use the term "Small Tech" to refer to microsystems, MEMS, and nanotechnologies that result in highly miniaturized biological or mechanical machines, so small their operation can't be seen by the naked eye. These machines sense or process information and react to it. Small Tech will become one of the driving forces behind industry, medicine and research in this century.
A rich portfolio of Small Tech IP has already been established in the Pacific Northwest. The Center for Nanotechnology at the University of Washington was the first such center established in the USA. The Pacific Northwest National Laboratory, Battelle's Pacific Northwest Division, Washington Technology Center, University of Oregon, Oregon State and Oregon Health Sciences University are all engaged in different areas of Small Tech research as well. We will draw on the large research base of Small Tech intellectual property available in the PNW and elsewhere to support building new companies.
